The newly appointed Prime Minister of Nepal, Sushila Karki, has taken a significant step by expanding her interim cabinet, marking a fresh chapter following the violent protests that occurred last month. These protests, which were primarily led by youth advocating for change, tragically resulted in the death of at least 73 individuals and prompted the previous administration to step down. Karki, who was formerly the chief justice and is 73 years old, now aims to guide the nation towards stability and reform.
On Sunday, the President of Nepal, Ram Chandra Paudel, officiated the swearing-in of two fresh faces in the cabinet—Bablu Gupta, a vibrant 28-year-old social activist, and Dr. Sudha Sharma, a distinguished health professional. This cabinet expansion underscores Karki’s dedication to empowering young voices and experienced individuals in governance.
Gupta, who leads the volunteer group known as 100's Group, has garnered respect for his impactful social initiatives centered around food distribution and educational opportunities for marginalized communities. His appointment as Minister of Youth and Sports has been met with enthusiasm, especially among the youth who were at the forefront of the protests in September.
Dr. Sudha Sharma, now serving as Minister of Health and Population, comes with years of expertise in public health and maternal welfare. Her advocacy for policy improvements and healthcare accessibility has established her as a reputable figure in the industry.
Government sources indicate that Karki has proposed two additional names for her cabinet of ten, yet these appointments remain pending as consultations with youth representatives are ongoing. Insiders from the president’s office have disclosed that discussions are still in progress to finalize the cabinet composition.
Having assumed her role in the wake of significant unrest, Karki now faces the formidable challenge of uniting a fractured nation, re-establishing public trust in its leaders, and preparing for impending national elections slated for March 5. Her commitment to "transparent governance and unity" has struck a chord with citizens eager for reform after years of political turmoil.
The induction of Gupta and Sharma into Nepal's interim administration has instilled hope across the nation, representing a generational pivot towards a more transparent and inclusive political landscape.
