In a decisive conclusion to their T20 series against the West Indies, New Zealand triumphed in Dunedin on Thursday. The swing bowler Jacob Duffy made a significant impact, claiming four wickets for 35 runs, guiding New Zealand to an impressive eight-wicket win in the final Twenty20 match. This victory ensured New Zealand clinched the series with a 3-1 lead thanks to a stellar all-around performance.
The West Indies struggled right from the outset after New Zealand's captain, Mitch Santner, opted to bowl first. The team faced early setbacks, losing wickets rapidly. Only Roston Chase, who scored 38 runs, alongside Romario Shepherd, who contributed 36 off 22 balls, managed to counter New Zealand’s bowlers. Their efforts resulted in a total of 140 all out, a score deemed insufficient given the match circumstances.
From the beginning, New Zealand's bowlers dominated. Kyle Jamieson highlighted this early on by dismissing Alick Athanaze in the second over. Duffy's pivotal third over turned the tide entirely, where he claimed three wickets for just a single run, leaving the West Indies in disarray. His precise swing bowling earned him both the Man of the Match accolade and the Player of the Series title for his exceptional consistency.
Despite an aggressive start from West Indies’ captain, Shai Hope, who launched the first ball for six, their attempt to establish control faltered as wickets fell continuously. Rovman Powell managed a scant 11 runs before succumbing to an ill-advised shot, placing the visitors at 48-5 after the powerplay. Jason Holder attempted to stabilize the innings with a 42-run partnership alongside Chase, but following their dismissals, the hope of a sizeable target dissipated.
Shepherd attempted to rally the team with some late fireworks, hitting a few fours and three sixes to push the score past the 100-run threshold. However, his innings ended at long-on, granting Duffy his fourth wicket and tenth of the series. Jimmy Neesham played a crucial role with both ball and glove, taking two wickets for 31 runs along with three catches, concluding the innings in the 19th over.
Chasing a target of 141, New Zealand's opening pair made the challenge seem uncomplicated. Tim Robinson set the tone with a rapid 45 off 24 balls, while Devon Conway anchored the innings with an unbeaten 47. Together, they secured victory with over three overs remaining, displaying both aggression and composure.
Captain Mitch Santner lauded his team’s performance, particularly the bowlers, stating, “We anticipated some assistance from the pitch, but our seamers took early wickets, which is crucial in T20 cricket. Our bowling has been remarkable.”
Conversely, West Indies' captain Shai Hope acknowledged his team's lack of readiness. He remarked, “We must be prepared from the outset. I don’t believe we were today, but I commend the players for their efforts.” Despite the setback, he expressed optimism about the team’s growth for future matches.
This victory means New Zealand claimed the T20 series 3-1, continuing their impressive record at home. The focus now shifts to the three-match One Day International (ODI) series commencing Sunday in Christchurch, followed by three Test matches in December. West Indies will be eager to bounce back in the longer formats, while New Zealand will seek to maintain their stronghold at home.
