In response to escalating unrest, Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka has instituted a nightly curfew surrounding the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey. This decision follows days of mounting protests, confrontations with police, and heightened concerns regarding the living conditions experienced by detainees within the facility. The curfew aims to restore order amid these challenges.
City officials have announced that the curfew will remain in effect from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice, targeting areas adjacent to Delaney Hall. Additionally, pedestrian access and vehicular traffic have been restricted in certain regions close to the detention center, allowing entry only for those with official business. These measures were deemed necessary as protests intensified and interactions between demonstrators and law enforcement escalated.
Protests emerged after reports indicated that detainees had launched hunger strikes and staged work stoppages, challenging purportedly inadequate living conditions, delays in their immigration cases, and access to necessary services. Advocacy groups rallied outside the center advocating for reforms and greater transparency regarding the treatment of individuals held inside.
Tensions peaked over the past week as the protests grew larger. Officials reported numerous confrontations between demonstrators and police, leading to the use of crowd-control measures, including tear gas. Several arrests occurred as authorities sought to prevent blockades and disruptions at the facility.
Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey expressed support for efforts to ease tensions and allocated additional state police assistance. Officials cited public safety concerns stemming from repeated clashes as reasoning for the heightened response. To mitigate potential conflicts, designated protest zones were established to separate demonstrators from operational areas of the facility.
Delaney Hall has been a topic of controversy since its re-designation as a significant immigration detention center under federal contract. Operated by the GEO Group for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it has faced backlash from local officials, immigration advocates, and legislators over its treatment of detainees and the oversight of its operations. This East Coast facility can accommodate more than 1,000 individuals.
Mayor Baraka has actively criticized the center for several months, calling for heightened local oversight and questioning whether it adheres to municipal regulations. His previous confrontations with federal authorities have drawn national media attention.
Despite the ongoing tensions, authorities confirmed the resumption of some family visitation programs, which were temporarily halted during the peak of the protests. Security concerns were cited for these earlier suspensions as advocates continue to campaign for better access and conditions for detainees.
Federal officials defended the facility against allegations of mistreatment while emphasizing the priority of safety, warning that violent actions against officers and operations would be intolerable. Protest organizers maintain that urgent reforms are necessary to safeguard the rights of detainees.
This situation continues to attract nationwide attention, reflecting broader discussions about immigration enforcement, detention practices, and public demonstrations. Political figures from both major parties have engaged in the debate as tensions around Delaney Hall endure.
Currently, the nightly curfew is enforced as officials work to deter further unrest. Residents and demonstrators are encouraged to maintain peaceful behavior while discussions and investigations about Delaney Hall's conditions are ongoing. The facility is likely to remain a focal point of national scrutiny as protests are anticipated to persist.
