Investigation Launched on 1.2 Million Tesla Cars Over Suspension Safety Issues

Investigation Launched on 1.2 Million Tesla Cars Over Suspension Safety Issues

Post by : Saif Rahman

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States is commencing a preliminary investigation involving roughly 1.2 million Tesla vehicles due to alarming reports of suspension failures that risk steering control loss.

This inquiry centers on select 2018–2020 Tesla Model 3 and 2021–2023 Tesla Model Y vehicles, responding to a surge in consumer grievances.

Reviewing Over 150 Complaints

The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation has assessed 156 complaints that allege incidents where the front lower lateral suspension link disengaged during operation.

Such suspension failures could make the vehicle impossible to drive, necessitating towing services.

While most owners reported these failures occurred unexpectedly, a few noticed strange sounds prior to the suspension issues.

No Injuries or Accidents Reported

Currently, the regulator has no information regarding any accidents, injuries, or fatalities tied to the reported defect.

The NHTSA will investigate the issue's cause, extent, and seriousness to conclude if further regulatory measures, including a potential recall, are necessary.

Issues Broader Than Prior Recalls

Tesla has a history of recalling vehicles for similar suspension issues.

A 2021 recall involved about 2,800 Model 3 vehicles due to production flaws, and another recall in 2023 affected 422 Model 3 vehicles with similar problems.

Nevertheless, the NHTSA indicates that the newly reported failures might encompass a wider scope than past recalls, possibly indicating a different root cause.

Potential for Further Regulatory Action

This investigation marks the initial phase of the NHTSA's defect scrutiny process.

If a safety-related defect is confirmed, it may prompt wider recalls or additional corrective actions.

As of now, Tesla has not provided an immediate comment regarding the investigation.

Continuous Vehicle Safety Oversight

With ongoing investigations into vehicle reliability and component efficacy, Tesla remains under rigorous evaluation by US safety regulators.

This latest investigation underscores the persistent efforts to uphold vehicle safety standards during the rising adoption of electric vehicles in global markets.
