The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to three U.S.-based scientists for their groundbreaking research in quantum mechanics. John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis have been recognized “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantization in an electric circuit,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on October 7, 2025.
Their research showed that quantum mechanical properties, typically observed at the smallest scales, can be demonstrated on a macroscopic level. This discovery opens doors to the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum computers, quantum cryptography, and advanced quantum sensors. Clarke described their findings as the foundation for quantum computing, highlighting its growing impact on modern technology.
Clarke, born in the UK and now a professor at the University of California, expressed surprise at receiving the award, calling it “the surprise of my life.” He praised his fellow laureates, noting their significant contributions to science. Devoret, born in France, is a professor at Yale University and the University of California, where Martinis also teaches. The prize, totaling 11 million Swedish kronor ($1.17 million), will be equally shared among the three scientists.
Olle Eriksson, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, emphasized the importance of quantum mechanics, calling it “the foundation of all digital technology” and celebrating the ongoing relevance of century-old discoveries. Clarke also highlighted the practical applications of their research, noting that it underpins technologies like mobile phones.
The Nobel Prize in Physics, considered one of the most prestigious awards in science, has a rich history of honoring pioneers such as Albert Einstein, Marie and Pierre Curie, Max Planck, and Niels Bohr. Last year, the prize recognized contributions to artificial intelligence by John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton.
This year’s Nobel ceremonies will take place in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, where the laureates will receive their medals and prize money. The Peace Prize will be awarded separately in Oslo.
The 2025 Physics Nobel highlights the transformative potential of quantum mechanics and its crucial role in advancing digital technology, computing, and scientific innovation worldwide.
