North Korea’s military has accused South Korea of flying drones across the border this week, warning that South Korea will face consequences for what it called “unpardonable hysteria.” South Korea swiftly denied the allegations.
Earlier this month, North Korean forces reportedly used special electronic warfare technology to bring down a South Korean drone flying near a North Korean border town. The drone was said to have two cameras filming certain areas, according to a statement from the North Korean military published by state media.
The North Korean military also mentioned that in late September, South Korea sent another drone into its airspace, which was forced to crash after electronic attacks. The drone reportedly contained video footage of important North Korean sites.
North Korea strongly condemned these incursions as a blatant violation of its sovereignty and warned that South Korea would “pay a dear price” for these provocative acts. South Korea’s official name is the Republic of Korea, often abbreviated as ROK.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry denied operating drones on the dates mentioned by North Korea. The South Korean president ordered a thorough investigation into the claims.
Since taking office in June, South Korea’s government has sought to restore dialogue with North Korea. However, North Korea has continuously rejected these overtures. Recently, South Korea’s leader reached out to China’s president to mediate tensions, who advised patience.
North Korea has avoided talks with both South Korea and the United States since 2019, after nuclear diplomacy with the U.S. collapsed due to disagreements over sanctions. Since then, North Korea has focused on strengthening its nuclear arsenal and has declared a hostile “two-state” system, aiming to end relations with South Korea.
Drone flights have long been a point of tension between the two Koreas, with each side accusing the other of crossing borders with drones over recent years. North Korea accused South Korea in 2024 of sending drones over its capital to drop propaganda leaflets, though South Korea’s military couldn’t verify those claims.
Tensions flared then but subsided without major conflict. South Korea has also accused North Korea of drone flights over its territory and in late 2022 reported firing warning shots and scrambling jets in response to North Korean drone incursions.
The ongoing drone disputes continue to fuel mistrust and raise concerns about stability on the Korean Peninsula.
