After Typhoon Bavi unleashed torrential rains and strong winds, severe flooding has devastated northern China, submerging roads and sweeping away vehicles, affecting thousands of residents across multiple provinces.
Key regions impacted include Hebei and Liaoning provinces, where rising waters disrupted lives, damaged infrastructure, and necessitated emergency rescue efforts from authorities.
The flooding followed the arrival of Typhoon Bavi, reported to be the strongest storm to impact mainland China this year, and it brought heavy rainfall across the eastern and northeastern sectors of the country.
In Hebei's Kuancheng County, floodwaters reached over two meters high, completely submerging roads and trapping local residents. Online videos depict cars being swept away by powerful currents, colliding against one another.
Authorities estimated that around 1,800 villagers were stranded due to the flooding, with emergency teams deployed to assist in relocating individuals to safer locations.
Numerous neighborhoods across different cities have seen streets completely inundated, leaving vehicular access nearly impossible.
Suspension of Train Services and School Closures
In addition to road disruptions, heavy rainfall has also halted train services throughout northeastern China. In Shenyang, multiple train lines were suspended, affecting over 30 sections of rail due to flood risks.
To ensure safety, several schools across districts, particularly in Jilin Province, have closed as local governments mitigate risks amid the fierce weather.
Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve.
Liaoning officials have instigated a red alert for flash floods, underlining an alarming risk in vulnerable regions.
Businesses have been directed to suspend operations, and residents are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall.
Meteorological agencies have warned that northeastern and eastern China could experience fierce thunderstorms, hail, and high winds, with gusts potentially exceeding 117 kilometers per hour.
Reports from China’s Ministry of Water Resources indicate that 46 rivers across the nation are flowing above warning levels following ongoing heavy rainfall.
Emergency teams remain on alert as forecasts indicate potential for more rain, raising the threat of further floods and landslides.
Authorities are actively carrying out rescue operations while keeping a close watch on river levels and enhancing flood-control measures in high-risk areas.
