The NYPD community is mourning after Detective Alicia Stone, 40, and mother of three, died in Colombia about a week following a cosmetic operation. Stone, a 13-year veteran assigned to the Internal Affairs Bureau, was discovered unresponsive in her hotel room, prompting immediate calls for clarity around the circumstances of her death.
Reports indicate Stone traveled to Colombia on October 16 for liposuction and a gluteal fat transfer, a procedure commonly referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). Seven days later she was taken to Fundación Valle del Lili Hospital, where physicians recorded her cause of death as an “unspecified cardiac arrest.”
Her husband, Michael Stone, has expressed deep concern about the events preceding her death, saying that he was told she had seemed “well” in the hours before she became ill. He is pressing for a formal autopsy and a thorough inquiry, asserting that key details remain unexplained.
Colleagues and friends remember Detective Stone as a committed officer and loving parent whose dedication to duty touched many across the force. A fundraiser established for her family highlights the sense of loss felt by fellow officers and the community she served.
Those close to her say she balanced demanding police work with family life, and that her sudden passing has left loved ones and co-workers searching for answers about what went wrong during her trip.
Medical specialists caution that while BBLs are increasingly sought after, the operations carry significant hazards, notably the risk of fat embolism if fat enters the bloodstream, which can be fatal. Such complications have been documented in medical literature and are a known concern with this type of surgery.
Authorities have reportedly engaged the Colombian National Police as well as U.S. consular officials and the State Department. The NYPD has dispatched an investigator to Colombia to assist in gathering information and coordinating with local authorities.
Stone’s death has renewed scrutiny of medical tourism and the potential dangers patients face when seeking cosmetic procedures abroad, prompting calls for better transparency and safety measures for international medical care.
