Old Doha Port Champions Earth Day with Marine Preservation Initiatives

Old Doha Port Champions Earth Day with Marine Preservation Initiatives

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In celebration of Earth Day, Old Doha Port presents its commitment to marine conservation through various environmental initiatives focused on waste management and seabed protection. These efforts are pivotal to preserving the marine environment that underpins its operations, in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030 and sustainable tourism objectives.

A cornerstone of these initiatives is the annual Seabed Cleaning Initiative, which began in 2023 and is now in its fourth year. This program unites professional divers, technical specialists, government entities, and private stakeholders to cleanse the seabed at depths reaching six meters. Efforts focus on removing harmful plastics, abandoned fishing gear, ropes, and other sizable debris that threaten marine ecosystems and navigation safety.

Prior to each cleanup, comprehensive surveys identify heavily polluted areas. Waste is meticulously sorted, and recyclables are processed with the help of specialized recycling partners. This initiative also aims to educate the public on marine preservation and fosters community engagement in safeguarding coastal environments.

Additionally, Old Doha Port boasts robust marine pollution response capabilities. Equipped with essential tools like floating barriers to contain oil spills and specialized recovery and treatment gear, trained response teams stand ready for emergencies, with regular drills conducted in collaboration with relevant agencies to ensure optimal readiness.

Furthermore, the port enforces a comprehensive waste management system for marine activities, featuring dedicated waste collection points, sewage processing facilities, and storage tanks for waste oils. Discharges into marina waters are strictly forbidden, and ongoing monitoring ensures compliance with environmental regulations.

Through these dedicated efforts, Old Doha Port enhances its commitment to marine ecosystem protection while contributing to sustainable development in Qatar.
