Oman Suggests Optional Transit Fee for Strait of Hormuz, US Voices Opposition

Oman Suggests Optional Transit Fee for Strait of Hormuz, US Voices Opposition

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Oman has put forward a suggestion to the United States and allied nations regarding a voluntary transit fee for vessels navigating through the Strait of Hormuz.

While some sources indicate that this charge would be optional, officials from Iran have made it clear that they plan to oversee transactions in this crucial maritime corridor and do not recognize any fee as voluntary.

Iran Justifies Transit Fees

Mehdi Mohammadi, an advisor to Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, remarked that the terminology of the charge is secondary. He mentioned it could be labelled as "tolls or security service fees for navigation," asserting that "free services are nonexistent globally."

Iran has expressed its intention to jointly manage the Strait with Oman, yet remains open to unilateral control should Oman decline involvement.

Trump Condemns Toll Suggestion

This news follows closely after US President Donald Trump cautioned about dire consequences for Oman should it impose a fee on ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz.

This proposal directly contrasts previous US assurances that passage through the Strait would remain free and unrestricted.

Iran Argues for Memorandum of Understanding

Iran continues to refute US claims, referencing a memorandum of understanding signed between Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, which allows for 60 days of free passage, after which both Iran and Oman would control transit. Iranian officials argue this agreement permits Iran to impose a toll.

The agreement states that Iran will consult with Oman to "define future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz, in line with international law and the rights of coastal nations."

US Expresses Concerns Over Proposal

Reports indicate that the Trump administration has raised concerns regarding the Iranian-Omani proposal, signaling a desire for discussions on these issues.

Recently, Trump criticized the notion of charging ships for crossing the Strait as "unacceptable," even though the current agreement grants Iran authority to levy a toll post the initial free period.

Iran Implements Specific Navigation Paths

Amid the 60-day period of complimentary passage, Iran has affirmed that ships must adhere to established routes. Authorities have warned that vessels deviating from these routes risk forfeiting their transit rights.

Just last week, Iran targeted a vessel that was allegedly off course in the Strait.

Potential Changes in Transit Governance

Should this proposed fee structure and designated shipping routes be enacted, it would dramatically alter management of the Strait of Hormuz. This change would eliminate the previous open-access model while enabling Iran to secure ongoing revenue from transit fees, asserting a significant influence over a crucial global trade artery that transports approximately 20% of the world's oil and gas supplies.
