Ontario Faces Significant Rise in Lyme Disease as Tick Season Grows

Ontario's public health authorities are alerting the community to take precautions against tick bites as the region witnessed a notable spike in Lyme disease cases last year. Reports from Grey Bruce Public Health indicate that around 3,115 individuals were diagnosed with Lyme disease in Ontario during 2025, which marks a 33% increase compared to the prior year.

As more residents engage in outdoor activities during warmer weather, health experts highlight the importance of staying alert, particularly for hikers, cyclists, and families enjoying summer.

Climate Change Linked to Increased Tick Activity

The public health body notes that a significant part of the Grey-Bruce area is now recognized as a high-risk zone for blacklegged ticks, known for transmitting various pathogens responsible for illnesses, including Lyme disease.

Public Health Manager Gillian Jordan remarked that higher temperatures are prolonging the ticks' active periods. Ticks are now emerging earlier each spring and remaining active well into the fall, with their range spreading across the province.

Despite some areas being regarded as higher risk, these ticks could potentially be found in all parts of Ontario.

Over 200 Cases Documented in 2026

As of now, health authorities report nearly 200 Lyme disease cases in Ontario this year. Key early indicators of the disease include symptoms like fever, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, joint pain, and a distinctive bull's-eye rash.

Medical professionals advise those experiencing these symptoms to seek medical help quickly, as early diagnosis can typically lead to effective treatment with antibiotics.

However, failure to manage infections can result in severe complications, including arthritis, neurological disorders, numbness, and even paralysis.

Quick Tick Removal is Crucial

Experts emphasize that removing ticks quickly is essential to minimizing infection risks. Generally, ticks need to be attached for at least 24 to 36 hours before they can spread the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease.

Public health officials recommend performing a thorough check on oneself after outdoor activities, including children and pets. Showering post-activity and using high heat in dryers for clothes can also help eliminate ticks that may have clung to clothing.

Preventative Measures Against Tick Bites

Grey Bruce Public Health suggests various strategies to prevent tick bites:

  • Utilize insect repellents containing DEET or Icaridin.
  • Dress in long sleeves, long pants, and closed shoes.
  • Tuck pants into socks and shirts into pants to minimize exposed skin.
  • Stick to cleared trails and steer clear of tall grass and thick vegetation.
  • Opt for lighter-colored clothing to help spot ticks easily.
  • Use a lint roller to check for ticks before getting into vehicles.
  • Conduct full-body inspections after being outdoors.
  • Carefully check pets for ticks.

Other Tick-Borne Illnesses

Aside from Lyme disease, blacklegged ticks may also transmit parasites and viruses associated with illnesses such as babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Powassan virus disease.

Residents encountering ticks can utilize the free online eTick platform for assistance with identification and to access further information through public health resources.

With the increase in outdoor activities in Ontario during summer, health authorities are continuing to run awareness campaigns aimed at minimizing infections. Health officials stress that basic preventive steps and timely treatment are critical in managing tick-borne diseases as populations continue to grow throughout the province.

Reasons Behind the Rise in Lyme Disease

Health officials attribute the rise in Lyme disease cases to warming weather extending tick activity and broadening their habitat.

Reported Lyme Disease Cases in Ontario

In 2025, Ontario recorded approximately 3,115 Lyme disease cases, reflecting a notable 33% increase from 2024.

Recognizing Early Signs of Lyme Disease

Common early symptoms encompass fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, alongside a bull's-eye rash.

Preventative Measures Against Tick Bites

Utilizing insect repellent, donning protective gear, remaining on cleared paths, and performing body inspections can significantly lower risks.

Treatment Availability for Lyme Disease

Indeed, Lyme disease can typically be treated effectively with antibiotics if detected early.

Future Health Initiatives

Authorities are poised to persist with awareness campaigns and stress preventive steps as tick populations continue to be active for extended periods due to climate changes.
