OpenAI Sora Adds Controls For Copyright Owners and Revenue Sharing

OpenAI Sora Adds Controls For Copyright Owners and Revenue Sharing

Post by : Rameen Ariff

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to introduce new controls for its AI video-generating tool, Sora, giving content owners more authority over how their characters are used. The company also plans to share revenue with rights holders who allow their characters to appear in AI-generated videos.

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, copyright owners, including movie and television studios, will have more options to manage their characters, including the ability to block unauthorized use.

As AI-generated content grows, concerns about intellectual property rights are rising. Companies are now seeking ways to balance innovation with fair compensation for creators.

OpenAI recently launched Sora as a standalone app in the US and Canada. Users can create AI-generated videos up to 10 seconds long and share them on social media-style streams. The app has quickly gained popularity, though some major studios, such as Disney, have already opted out of allowing their content to appear in Sora.

The company plans to test a revenue-sharing model for rights holders who permit the use of their characters. Altman stated that the framework will initially involve trial and error, but OpenAI aims to refine it before implementing a consistent system across its AI products.

Sora, which was first released last year, marks OpenAI’s expansion into multimodal AI tools and puts it in competition with similar platforms from Meta and Google. Meta recently launched its AI video tool, Vibes, which allows users to create and share short-form AI videos.
