Oregon showcased their strength in the ongoing basketball season with a resounding 83-69 victory against South Dakota State on Wednesday night in Eugene. Jackson Shelstad led the charge with 22 points, while Takai Simpkins chipped in with 20, driving the Ducks to their third consecutive win.
The duo was instrumental, contributing to nine out of Oregon’s 15 three-pointers, leveraging their long-range shooting for a significant advantage. Shelstad not only scored but also provided eight assists, highlighting his dual threat on the court. Nate Bittle made his presence felt as well, achieving a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Although South Dakota State entered the contest with a 2-1 record and fought hard, they struggled against the Ducks’ varied offensive attack. Joe Sayler and Luke Haertle each put up 14 points for the Jackrabbits, who made a compelling run in the second half but ultimately fell short.
The Jackrabbits narrowed a double-digit lead to just one point during the second half, yet Oregon swiftly responded with consecutive three-pointers from Shelstad and Simpkins, reclaiming control of the game.
Shelstad’s outstanding performance stood out particularly as it came on the heels of a previous challenging game, where he had difficulty finding his rhythm following a hand injury. On this night, however, he displayed confidence and poise typical of an experienced point guard.
The first half was characterized by back-and-forth scoring with Oregon gaining an edge after Shelstad's three-pointer put them ahead 31-22. They concluded the half leading 40-34.
Simpkins led the first half’s scoring with 12 points, with Bittle contributing 11 and six rebounds, setting the groundwork for his effective performance. South Dakota State kept pace thanks to good shooting from Haertle and Sayler but fell behind due to Oregon's perimeter proficiency.
As the second half progressed, Oregon built a 56-45 lead after Drew Carter's three-pointer at the 12:23 mark. Yet, South Dakota State answered back with a 13-3 run, aided by valuable three-pointers from Jackson, Delzell, and Haertle. They managed to tighten the score to 59-58 with approximately nine and a half minutes remaining.
The Jackrabbits briefly threatened by pulling within two at 64-62, but the Ducks surged ahead with essential three-pointers from Shelstad and Simpkins, extending their lead to 70-63.
With back-to-back jumpers late in the game, Simpkins and Shelstad pushed the score to 75-64, sealing the game and ensuring the Ducks held firm on defense.
This matchup highlighted Oregon’s potential when key players collaborate effectively. Shelstad’s leadership, Simpkins’ sharpshooting, and Bittle’s rebounding prowess were pivotal in navigating the Jackrabbits' comeback efforts.
With this victory, Oregon stands at 3-0 for the season, looking to maintain their unbeaten streak against more formidable opponents in the upcoming weeks. Conversely, South Dakota State fell to 2-2 and seeks to regroup in their next contest.
The Ducks’ knack for hitting long-range shots, coupled with strong defensive play, proved overwhelming for the Jackrabbits, setting the stage for what promises to be a compelling season for Oregon as they seek national recognition once more.
