Authorities in Osaka have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a violent street robbery involving the use of a stun gun, as police continue to investigate possible links to organized crime networks.
The suspect, identified as Yoshimitsu Suga, turned himself in at a local police station and was subsequently detained on suspicion of robbery and assault. According to investigators, he allegedly attacked a 37-year-old Chinese national in Sumiyoshi Ward in February.
Police reports indicate that the victim, a company employee, was walking along a street when he was suddenly assaulted with a stun gun. The attacker incapacitated him before stealing a bag containing approximately 5 million yen in cash along with other personal belongings.
Two additional suspects, both aged 18, had already been arrested prior to Suga’s surrender. Authorities believe one acted as a lookout while the other served as a getaway driver, suggesting a coordinated operation.
Investigators are now examining whether the suspects are connected to “tokuryu,” a loosely organised and mobile criminal network known in Japan for carrying out coordinated crimes using temporary alliances. Such groups have gained attention in recent years for their unpredictable structure and use of modern communication methods to evade detection.
Despite his arrest, Suga has reportedly declined to cooperate fully with authorities, stating that he is unable to respond to questions at this time. Police are continuing to gather evidence and are exploring the broader network behind the incident.
The case highlights growing concerns about organized street crime in urban Japan, particularly involving targeted robberies and the use of non-lethal weapons like stun guns to quickly disable victims.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as investigations into the case continue.
