Acclaimed American actress Sally Kirkland, celebrated for her Oscar-nominated role in the 1987 film Anna, passed away at the age of 84. Confirmation of her death came from her representative, Michael Greene, who noted she died at a hospice in Palm Springs, California, on Tuesday morning.
Kirkland faced significant health challenges in recent months, leading friends to start a GoFundMe campaign earlier this fall to assist with her medical expenses after suffering multiple fractures, including her neck, right wrist, and left hip. Complications during her recovery resulted in infections that necessitated hospitalization and rehabilitation.
A remarkable journey through various artistic mediums
Born in New York City, Kirkland was immersed in the art world from a young age, thanks to her mother, who was a fashion editor for renowned publications like Vogue and Life. Encouraged to model at age five, she later attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and trained under notable mentors such as Philip Burton and Lee Strasberg, famed for his Method acting approach.
Her early career highlight was featured in Andy Warhol’s 1964 short film, 13 Most Beautiful Women, propelling her into the New York art scene. Over the next six decades, she enjoyed a dynamic acting career, contributing to stage productions, television series, and appearing in over 200 films.
Noteworthy cinematic roles
Kirkland's extensive film portfolio boasts memorable performances in iconic movies, including:
The Sting (1973) with Paul Newman and Robert Redford
The Way We Were alongside Barbra Streisand
JFK, directed by Oliver Stone
Revenge featuring Kevin Costner
Cold Feet with Keith Carradine and Tom Waits
Bruce Almighty starring Jim Carrey
EDtv directed by Ron Howard
Heatwave alongside Cicely Tyson
High Stakes opposite Kathy Bates
She also took part in the 1991 TV movie The Haunted, inspired by real-life paranormal events, and made a memorable cameo in Mel Brooks’ comedic classic Blazing Saddles.
Her acclaimed role in Anna
In 1987, Kirkland's portrayal of a fading Czech film star in Anna garnered her immense acclaim, earning her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and an Academy Award nomination. The film depicted her character's efforts to rebuild her life in the U.S. while mentoring a young actress, played by Paulina Porizkova.

Impact on television and stage
In addition to her film career, Kirkland made significant contributions to television, starring in series such as Criminal Minds, Roseanne, and Head Case. She was also featured in Valley of the Dolls and Charlie’s Angels. Her stage work included performances in off-Broadway plays like Sweet Eros and Shakespearean productions for the New York Shakespeare Festival.
Kirkland believed that an actor must engage deeply with Shakespeare to truly claim the title of actor, noting its influence on one’s performance and understanding of language.
A life dedicated to spirituality, activism, and creativity
Beyond her artistic endeavors, Kirkland was known for her spiritual pursuits and humanitarian efforts. Active in various New Age movements, she taught Insight Transformational Seminars and was a long-time member of a spiritual community focused on soul transcendence. Throughout her life, she volunteered for numerous causes, supporting those affected by AIDS, cancer, and heart disease, while feeding the homeless through American Red Cross efforts.
A visionary artist
Kirkland was recognized for her willingness to take artistic risks. Her early film, Futz (1969), gained notoriety for its daring content, which included a nude scene on a pig. Such boldness characterized her career, leading to Time magazine recognizing her as “the latter-day Isadora Duncan of nudothespianism” for her fearless performances and activism.
Even later in life, she continued to grace the screen and attended red-carpet events, including her appearance at the 2015 premiere of Love & Mercy in Beverly Hills, where she showcased her unique style.
Sally Kirkland’s nearly seven-decade career reflects her passion for artistry, emotional depth, and commitment to societal betterment. She leaves a legacy that continues to inspire artists globally.
Remembered as a bold performer, spiritual explorer, and dedicated humanitarian, her influence endures across generations of artists.
