40 Killed as Overcrowded Bus Falls Into Pakistan Ravine

40 Killed as Overcrowded Bus Falls Into Pakistan Ravine

Post by : Shakul

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of at least 40 passengers after an overcrowded bus plunged into a rocky ravine in the remote Dana Sar area of Pakistan's Balochistan province. Eight other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment as rescue operations continued throughout the day.

Officials described the incident as one of Pakistan's deadliest highway accidents in recent years, triggering nationwide grief and calls for stronger road safety measures.

Bus Was Carrying Extra Passengers

According to Balochistan government officials, the bus was travelling with 48 passengers, including additional travelers from another bus that had broken down earlier during the journey.

Authorities said the vehicle was overcrowded when it lost control on a mountainous highway before crashing nearly 25 metres into a rocky ravine, making rescue operations extremely difficult because of the steep terrain.

Survivor Describes Moments Before Crash

One injured survivor told local authorities that some passengers had objected when the driver stopped to accommodate additional travelers. The survivor claimed an argument broke out inside the bus, and during the confrontation one passenger allegedly grabbed the driver, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

Police have not independently confirmed this account and stated that a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Massive Rescue Operation Launched

Emergency workers, rescue volunteers, and paramilitary personnel climbed down the steep mountainside to reach the wreckage. Injured passengers were carried back on stretchers while the bodies of victims were carefully recovered using makeshift rescue equipment.

Hospitals in the region received the injured and the deceased for identification. Authorities said most victims have been identified through official documents, although a few bodies remain unidentified.

What caused the Pakistan bus crash?

Authorities believe the accident occurred after the overcrowded passenger bus lost control on a mountainous highway near Dana Sar in Balochistan. Investigators are examining several possible factors, including excessive speed, overcrowding, difficult road conditions, and reports of an argument inside the bus shortly before the vehicle plunged into the ravine. Police have not yet confirmed the exact cause and the investigation remains ongoing.

Why was the bus overcrowded?

Officials said the bus was transporting not only its scheduled passengers but also several people from another bus that had broken down during the journey. This resulted in the vehicle carrying more passengers than intended, increasing safety risks on the winding mountain roads.

How are authorities responding to the tragedy?

Emergency rescue teams, paramilitary personnel, police, and medical workers responded immediately after the crash. Rescue teams recovered victims from the deep ravine while hospitals treated survivors. Government authorities have launched a formal investigation and expressed condolences to the families of those killed.

Pakistan Faces Ongoing Road Safety Challenges

Road accidents remain a major concern across Pakistan due to poor road infrastructure, overloaded public transport, limited enforcement of traffic regulations, and dangerous driving conditions in mountainous regions.

Officials say improving highway safety, vehicle inspections, and passenger transport standards remains essential to reducing the number of fatal accidents across the country.

Pakistan records hundreds of serious road accidents every year, particularly in remote mountainous provinces where narrow highways, overloaded buses, and difficult terrain increase travel risks. Government agencies continue working on improving transport safety through stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, infrastructure upgrades, and emergency response capabilities.

The Dana Sar tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of passenger safety, proper vehicle capacity management, and stronger oversight of long-distance public transportation. Authorities are expected to review the findings of the investigation and determine whether additional safety measures are required to prevent similar disasters in the future.

Investigation Continues as Nation Mourns

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the victims' families. Authorities continue to identify the remaining victims while investigators examine evidence from the crash site to establish the circumstances that led to one of Pakistan's worst road disasters in recent years.
