At least 15 members of Pakistan's security forces were killed after a suicide bomber, backed by armed militants, launched a coordinated attack on a security checkpoint in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Thursday night. The assault also left 24 people injured, while security forces said 12 militants were killed during the operation.
According to the Pakistani military, the attackers first attempted to storm the security checkpoint but were pushed back by troops guarding the facility. After failing to breach the post, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the checkpoint's perimeter wall, triggering a massive explosion.
The powerful blast completely destroyed the security post and caused extensive damage to nearby areas. The military said those killed included 12 soldiers, two police officers, and a former forest department official.
Following the attack, security forces launched a clearance operation in the surrounding area to search for any militants who may have escaped after the assault.
The military blamed the attack on Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban. The group is separate from, but allied with, Afghanistan's Taliban rulers. There was no immediate claim of responsibility from the TTP.
Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan's Taliban government of providing safe haven to TTP militants, an allegation that Kabul has denied.
The latest attack comes amid a rise in militant violence across Pakistan in recent years, with police and security personnel frequently targeted. Pakistani authorities have blamed the TTP and its allied militant groups for many of these attacks.
