Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert warning of severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, urban flooding and the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Authorities described the next 12 to 24 hours as a critical period as the country prepares for another intense monsoon season.
Northern Regions Face Highest Risk
The warning identified Hunza and Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, along with several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as the most vulnerable areas. Officials fear that rapidly melting glaciers and increased rainfall could trigger dangerous floods and landslides across mountainous regions.
Urban Areas Also On Alert
Authorities have also warned residents in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and surrounding urban centers about possible flash flooding. Provincial and district administrations have been instructed to clear drainage systems and prepare emergency response measures to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.
Climate Change Intensifying Threats
Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change despite contributing less than one percent of global carbon emissions. Rising temperatures have accelerated glacier melt in the Hindu Kush, Himalaya and Karakoram mountain ranges, increasing the danger of glacial lake outburst floods.

Growing Number Of Glacial Lakes
According to international climate assessments, more than 3,000 glacial lakes have formed across northern Pakistan. Experts estimate that at least 33 of these lakes pose a serious risk of sudden flooding, threatening the lives of over seven million people living nearby.
Lessons From Previous Disasters
The country is still recovering from devastating floods in recent years. The catastrophic floods of 2022 killed nearly 1,700 people and displaced millions, while severe monsoon rains in 2025 also caused significant loss of life and property damage across multiple provinces.
Authorities Urge Public Caution
The NDMA has advised tourists and residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to stay updated on weather forecasts. Officials have also emphasized the need for stronger disaster preparedness systems and improved coordination among government agencies to minimize future climate-related losses.
