At least 17 people were killed and dozens more injured across Pakistan on Sunday, March 1, 2026, as violent pro‑Iran protests erupted in response to the reported death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint United States and Israeli military airstrike on Iran.
In Karachi, hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police and paramilitary forces near the United States Consulate after attempting to force their way toward the diplomatic compound. Officials said security forces used tear gas and baton charges to disperse crowds, and at least 10 people were killed in the port city amid the clashes, with more than 70 people wounded, according to the Karachi police surgeon’s office.
In the northern region of Gilgit‑Baltistan, protests turned deadly as well, with seven people reported killed and additional injuries as demonstrators confronted law enforcement. The unrest also spread to Islamabad, where tear gas was deployed to break up crowds near the US Embassy.
Protesters in multiple cities held up portraits of the late Iranian leader and chanted slogans critical of the United States and Israel. Law enforcement responded with force in several locations, imposing restrictions on public gatherings, including Section 144 in parts of Sindh and Punjab provinces aimed at preventing further violence.
The demonstrations reflect widespread anger among Shiite groups and other factions in Pakistan over international military strikes in Iran that reportedly killed Khamenei, a pivotal figure in Iran’s political and religious establishment.
Pakistan’s government, while urging restraint, also expressed condolences to the Iranian people and denounced targeting of state leaders as a violation of international law. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the country stood with Iran in its “hour of grief.”
Authorities in Islamabad and other cities reinforced security around diplomatic missions and key infrastructure to prevent further violence, and emergency measures remained in place as the situation continued to evolve.
