Pakistan witnessed a significant rise in militant violence during May 2026, with terror-related incidents increasing by 27 percent compared to the previous month, according to a new security assessment released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS). The report highlights growing security concerns as militant groups appear to be regaining operational momentum across several regions of the country.
According to the assessment, the increase comes after a brief period of relative decline in militant activity. Security analysts noted that various extremist and armed groups intensified their operations during May, leading to a noticeable rise in attacks targeting security personnel, government institutions, and civilian locations.
One of the most concerning findings in the report is the sharp increase in suicide attacks. Pakistan recorded six suicide bombings during May, marking a significant escalation compared to previous months. Security experts warn that the return of suicide attacks indicates a troubling shift in militant tactics and suggests that extremist networks continue to retain the capability to conduct high-impact operations.
Several regions experienced heightened security challenges during the month. Provinces that have historically faced militant activity continued to witness attacks, forcing security agencies to strengthen surveillance, intelligence operations, and counterterrorism measures. Authorities have remained on high alert amid fears that violence could further intensify in the coming months.
The report also underscores the persistent threat posed by militant organizations despite ongoing military and law enforcement efforts. Pakistan has spent years combating terrorism through security operations and intelligence-based actions, yet extremist groups continue to adapt their strategies and exploit vulnerabilities in certain areas.
Analysts believe the increase in attacks highlights the need for a comprehensive approach that combines security operations with long-term political, economic, and social measures. Strengthening border management, improving intelligence coordination, and addressing factors that contribute to instability remain key priorities for policymakers.
The latest figures serve as a reminder of the complex security challenges facing Pakistan. As authorities continue their efforts to counter terrorism, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether security agencies can contain the resurgence of militant violence and prevent further escalation across the country.
