A powerful cyclone has struck Papua New Guinea, leaving widespread destruction and claiming at least 11 lives. The autonomous region of Bougainville has emerged as one of the worst-hit areas.
According to local reports, the storm caused massive damage to coastal communities, flattening homes and infrastructure. A tragic landslide during the night buried a house under mud, killing eight people in a single incident.
Initial estimates suggest that more than 10,000 people have been affected, with nearly 20,000 residents in urgent need of humanitarian assistance across Bougainville. Many families have been displaced as villages were completely destroyed.
The cyclone also severely damaged roads and bridges, cutting off access to remote communities and disrupting essential food supply chains. Schools across affected areas are expected to remain closed throughout the week.
Prime Minister James Marape stated that reaching remote regions remains a major challenge. Authorities are working continuously to assess the damage and ensure aid delivery.
Emergency relief efforts have already begun, including the distribution of food, clean drinking water, and temporary shelters for displaced residents. However, logistical challenges continue to slow down operations.
The cyclone also impacted the neighboring Solomon Islands, where remote areas reported significant damage. Meanwhile, Australia has pledged financial support, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressing solidarity with the affected nations.
The storm, which moved through the Solomon Sea with wind speeds reaching up to 300 km/h, was briefly classified as a Category 5 cyclone before weakening.
