Malaysia has suffered a major setback ahead of the prestigious Uber Cup Finals following the withdrawal of women’s doubles star Pearly Tan due to a recurring back injury.
The 24-year-old announced her decision through a public statement, expressing deep regret and apologising to her teammates, officials, and fans for being unable to represent the country in the tournament.
Pearly revealed that the injury was sustained during her recent competition and is linked to a similar condition she faced three years ago, which had previously threatened her career.
She described the decision as emotionally challenging, stating that it was difficult to step away from such an important event, especially when she wished to compete alongside her teammates.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia confirmed her withdrawal, with coaching director Rexy Mainaky stating that she was not fit to perform at the required level.
With her absence, Malaysia will miss its top women’s doubles combination, and her partner M. Thinaah is expected to be paired with another player for the tournament.
The Uber Cup Finals, set to take place in Horsens, will see Malaysia compete in Group B alongside strong teams such as Japan, Turkiye, and South Africa.
Despite the setback, the team is expected to rely on a mix of young doubles pairs and experienced singles players as they aim to remain competitive in the tournament.
