Durian farmers in Balik Pulau are witnessing an early flowering season this year, driven by prolonged dry and hot weather conditions. Orchard owners say the unusual climate pattern could lead to a longer harvest period and potentially more affordable prices for consumers.
Growers report that around 20% of durian trees have already begun fruiting ahead of schedule, raising expectations of an early market arrival by mid-April. If weather conditions remain stable, the main harvest is likely to extend from late April through August, offering a steady supply over several months.
Farmers note that the extended dry spell has been beneficial for flowering, as it reduces fungal diseases that often affect crops during wetter periods. However, it has also increased the need for careful orchard management, with regular watering required to maintain tree health and prevent stress.
Local producers highlight that Balik Pulau’s well-drained, granite-based soil contributes to the unique quality and taste of its durians. Popular varieties grown in the region include Black Thorn, Red Prawn and Green Skin, known for their rich flavour and texture.
Agriculture experts say that while early blooming can boost production, sudden weather changes—especially heavy rainfall—could still affect yields by causing flower drop. If favourable conditions persist, consumers may benefit from increased supply and more competitive pricing during the peak season.
The early bloom reflects how changing climate patterns are influencing agricultural cycles, with farmers adapting their practices to maximise yield while ensuring crop quality in unpredictable weather conditions.
