Penang is set to implement a full ban on single-use plastics starting September 1, marking a major step toward environmental sustainability. The move aims to reduce plastic waste while promoting the use of eco-friendly alternatives across the state.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that the government is actively exploring biodegradable materials that can replace conventional plastic products. These alternatives are designed to resemble plastic in appearance and function while being environmentally safe.
The transition is expected to begin as early as August 31, depending on supply readiness and industry preparedness. Authorities are working closely with manufacturers and industry stakeholders to ensure that the shift can be implemented smoothly.
Officials emphasized that the new materials must be practical for everyday use, especially for businesses such as hawkers and small traders. The goal is to maintain convenience while reducing environmental impact.
The state government has also assured that sufficient supplies of biodegradable products will be available before the full ban takes effect. This is intended to prevent disruptions to business operations and daily consumer activities.
Industry representatives have been engaged in discussions to support the transition, including plastic manufacturing associations. Initial costs for alternative materials may be slightly higher, but they are expected to stabilise over time as production scales up.
The initiative positions Penang as a leader in environmental policy in Malaysia, highlighting a commitment to balancing economic activity with long-term ecological responsibility.
