Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders in Perlis have strongly rejected claims of a no-confidence motion being planned against Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah, describing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. The rumours began circulating after the unexpected postponement of the state legislative assembly sitting, triggering speculation about possible internal tensions within the ruling coalition.
PN Perlis chairman Shahidan Kassim addressed the issue directly, stating that there is no agreement, discussion, or intention to table any no-confidence motion. He challenged those spreading such claims to present concrete proof, emphasizing that the narrative being circulated does not reflect the reality within the state government.
According to Shahidan, relations between PAS and Bersatu — the key parties in the Perlis administration — remain stable and cooperative. He stressed that PAS central leadership has already made a clear decision to continue supporting the current government until the next general election, dismissing any suggestion of a leadership change in the near future.
He further explained that PAS already commands a majority in the state assembly, meaning that if the party truly intended to replace the Menteri Besar, it would not require a no-confidence vote. Instead, such a move could be executed more directly. However, he reiterated that this is not the party’s approach, as maintaining unity and stability remains the priority.
Shahidan also pointed to guidance from Abdul Hadi Awang, who has advised party members to maintain strong internal relations and adhere to decisions made at the central leadership level. This directive, he said, reinforces the commitment to avoid unnecessary political conflict and to focus on governance.
The controversy intensified after six PAS assemblymen publicly called for an explanation regarding the postponement of the assembly session. Their statements led to further speculation about dissatisfaction within the coalition. However, Shahidan clarified that these assemblymen were acting in their individual capacities as elected representatives seeking clarification, rather than expressing an official party stance.
Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has also denied that the delay in the assembly sitting was due to fears of being removed from office. He stated that the decision was made based on administrative advice and in accordance with legal considerations, aimed at ensuring smooth governance. Overall, the situation highlights how political speculation can quickly escalate, even when coalition leaders insist that stability and unity remain intact.
