Thousands of people gathered in Metro Manila and several other major cities across the Philippines on Monday to protest ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s annual State of the Nation Address.
The demonstrations brought together protesters demanding greater accountability from the government. Many participants said authorities had failed to take strong action over the country's flood control corruption scandal, despite growing public concern and repeated calls for justice.
A key issue raised during the rallies was the government's handling of the flood control corruption scandal. Protesters claimed that investigations into the case have moved slowly and have not been carried out fairly.
According to demonstrators, the pace of the investigations has disappointed many people who are seeking accountability. Protesters argued that those responsible should face proper action and that the investigation process should be transparent and impartial.
The rallies reflected increasing public frustration over how the corruption case has been managed and the lack of visible progress in addressing the allegations.
Tensions increased before the main protest event in Quezon City, where police arrested 51 protesters.
Authorities said the arrests were linked to alleged offences committed during the demonstrations. However, activist organisations criticised the police action, describing the arrests as arbitrary. The groups also called for the immediate release of all those who were taken into custody.
The incident added to the tense atmosphere surrounding the nationwide demonstrations.
The protests highlighted wider public concerns about corruption, government accountability and governance in the Philippines.
As President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. prepared to deliver his annual State of the Nation Address, demonstrators used the occasion to express dissatisfaction with the government's response to the flood control corruption scandal and to demand greater accountability from public officials.
The rallies across Metro Manila and other major Philippine cities underscored the continuing public debate over transparency, justice and governance in the country.
