The Phoenix Suns pulled off a sensational 114-113 victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves in an NBA Cup clash on Friday night. This thrilling win came after they mounted a staggering late comeback, erasing an eight-point deficit in the game's final minute. Collin Gillespie emerged as the star of the night, netting a season-high 20 points and sinking the game-winning shot with just 6.4 seconds on the clock. His composed finish capped off one of the most thrilling endings this season for the Suns.
Despite facing challenges throughout the fourth quarter, things looked bleak for the Suns when the Timberwolves established a 113-105 advantage with only 1:09 remaining. However, Phoenix fought back valiantly. Dillon Brooks, contributing 22 points with four three-pointers, proved pivotal in keeping the Suns in contention, while Mark Williams added 19 points and eight boards. With this victory, the Suns moved to 2-0 in Group A of the NBA Cup, continuing a strong trajectory with nine wins in their last eleven contests.
On the other hand, Minnesota will lament how they let the win slip through their fingers. Anthony Edwards showcased his scoring prowess with 41 points and five three-pointers, scoring 19 of those in the third quarter to help erase an 18-point deficit. Julius Randle contributed 20 points, and Rudy Gobert added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Despite their impressive efforts, the Timberwolves faltered in the closing moments due to critical errors.
Minnesota's downfall started with three turnovers in the last minute, two of which directly translated to points for the Suns. Edwards, who performed magnificently throughout the game, missed two crucial free throws with just 12.7 seconds remaining. This failure gave Phoenix a lifeline. Jordan Goodwin, playing a critical role in the comeback, hit a three and a layup off these turnovers, narrowing the Timberwolves' lead to just one at 113-112.
In the last moments, Gillespie seized the moment, draining the game-winning shot as the crowd roared in anticipation. Minnesota still had an opportunity to respond, but their attempts fell short as they struggled to capitalize in the final seconds. The Wolves' last-minute mistakes overshadowed their earlier strong performance.
Edwards' scoring in Cup play has been impressive, with outings of 37, 30, and now 41 points over three games. However, those late free-throw misses took a heavy toll on the team. Minnesota’s record now stands at 2-1 in Group A, with a final Cup match against Oklahoma City on the horizon.
For the Suns, this win came against the backdrop of a challenging shooting night for Devin Booker, who logged just 16 points on 4-of-18 shooting and fouled out late in the action. Although he assisted on 10 baskets, he also had nine turnovers. As a team, the Suns faced ball control issues, culminating in a season-high 27 turnovers. Minnesota capitalized on these mistakes, scoring 29 points off them to maintain a lead for most of the second half.
Nonetheless, it was in the final moments that Minnesota lost its grip. A mix of turnovers, missed free throws, and defensive breakdowns afforded the Suns the chance they required. Phoenix looks ahead to two more Cup games against Sacramento and Oklahoma City, aiming to keep their record unblemished in Group A.
This thrilling victory underscored that even on a night filled with blunders, sheer determination and timely execution can dramatically alter the outcome. Gillespie's final basket not only secured a memorable win for Phoenix but also sustained their momentum in the NBA Cup.
