Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed that he will attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, later this month. The confirmation came after a phone call with Canada's newly-elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney, who officially invited Modi to the summit.
Sharing the news on social media platform X, PM Modi said, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark J Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.”
This will be the first formal interaction between Modi and Carney since Carney's party won Canada’s recent federal elections.
There had been speculation that PM Modi might skip the summit due to the ongoing tension between India and Canada, which worsened after the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year. The situation escalated when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of being involved in Nijjar’s death—an allegation that India strongly denied, calling it baseless.
The Ministry of External Affairs had previously said there was "no information" on PM Modi’s travel plans, which fueled the uncertainty.
The G7 Summit brings together leaders of the world’s most advanced economies: Canada, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. The European Union, the United Nations, the IMF, and the World Bank are also invited to attend.
