PM Phumtham May Dissolve House Amid Party Talks for Forming New Government

PM Phumtham May Dissolve House Amid Party Talks for Forming New Government

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Thailand’s political scene is facing uncertainty after the departure of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on August 30. Following her resignation, her Cabinet was immediately dissolved. In this vacuum, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has stepped in as the acting Prime Minister. While the caretaker Cabinet retains full administrative powers to handle urgent government business, it is expected to postpone major policy decisions that could bind any future government.

The focus now is on the possible dissolution of the House of Representatives. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham is reportedly considering this step under pressure from the People’s Party as political parties negotiate the formation of a new government. The possibility of cooperation between the Bhumjaithai Party and the People’s Party has also become a key point in discussions, as these parties try to decide the future direction of the country’s leadership.

Negotiations and Political Talks

On the evening of September 1, sources from the Pheu Thai Party said that discussions had taken place about forming a new government. The People’s Party reportedly set certain conditions for any coalition without making a full commitment. Senior leaders of Pheu Thai analyzed the situation carefully. In this context, Acting Prime Minister Phumtham, who is also a party executive, is said to have suggested dissolving the House. This would clear the way for early elections and allow the caretaker government to continue only temporarily, for about two more months.

During a meeting of the People’s Party on September 1, members of parliament (MPs) could not agree on which candidate to support for Prime Minister. They decided to postpone the discussion to the following day to give more time for a thorough review of the political situation.

Pressure from Parties

Phumtham is reportedly under pressure from the People’s Party to take action on House dissolution. At the same time, the Bhumjaithai Party claimed that it has the support of 280 MPs, including votes from the People’s Party, to form a new government. However, insiders from the People’s Party dismissed this claim as a political strategy aimed at applying pressure. They have not confirmed which side they will ultimately support.

Previously, People’s Party spokesman Parit Wacharasindhu explained that the party is carefully considering how to use its 140 MPs in choosing a Prime Minister who can dissolve the House. Parit emphasized that the party does not want a return to the old “red-blue” power blocs, which they believe harmed the country in the past. He also outlined three core conditions that the People’s Party will follow in making political decisions.

Parit added that the best solution for the country is an early House dissolution to hold new elections. The party has called for this step ever since an audio clip involving former PM Paetongtarn and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen was leaked.

He stressed that the authority to dissolve the House rests solely with Acting Prime Minister Phumtham. If he decides it is the right step to resolve the political crisis, he can act immediately without waiting for the People’s Party to make a final decision.

What This Means

If Phumtham decides to dissolve the House, it would trigger early elections, giving voters a chance to select a new government. Until then, the caretaker Cabinet will continue to manage urgent administrative matters, while major policy decisions are likely to be postponed.

The political situation remains fluid, with negotiations ongoing between major parties. The People’s Party is carefully weighing its options, considering both its role in forming a new government and its desire to avoid repeating the mistakes of previous power struggles. Meanwhile, Acting PM Phumtham holds a critical role in deciding the country’s immediate political path.

The coming days will be crucial in determining whether Thailand moves toward early elections or whether parties can agree on a coalition government to end the current political uncertainty.
