On Tuesday, the Granville Street Bridge in Vancouver was shut down in both directions as police responded to an ongoing incident, disrupting traffic during the peak afternoon rush. Motorists were forced to take alternative routes, leading to significant delays throughout the city.
The Vancouver Police Department announced the closure on social media and urged commuters to steer clear of the area. Drivers were advised to utilize other crossings like the Burrard Bridge and Cambie Bridge while law enforcement remained on-site. Public transit services also faced interruptions, with numerous TransLink bus routes rerouted due to the incident.
While authorities have not disclosed full details, initial reports suggest that the situation was not criminal. Local reports and social media indicate that the incident may have involved an individual experiencing a mental health crisis on the bridge. Police have yet to confirm these details, but emergency responders remained at the scene for several hours, keeping both directions blocked.
Shared videos and photos online appeared to show emergency personnel attending to the situation near the bridge. Witnesses reported seeing a woman near the edge of the bridge as police and rescue workers managed the incident safely. However, officials have not substantiated the online visuals or provided concrete information about the individual involved.
The extended closure led to considerable congestion in downtown Vancouver and surrounding neighborhoods, with drivers facing delays on connecting roads and bridges due to increased traffic on alternative routes. Transit passengers reported delays during the evening commute because buses, which typically use the Granville Street Bridge, were rerouted.
As one of Vancouver’s busiest routes, the Granville Street Bridge connects downtown with the city’s southern areas, handling thousands of vehicles each day. A major disruption here can greatly affect the city’s transportation network.
Police are urging the public to avoid the area while emergency services continue their work. As of late Tuesday night, no updates were provided regarding the bridge's reopening or any potential injuries related to the incident.
