Authorities in Norwich, Ontario, are probing a serious act of vandalism involving a stolen Pride flag and flagpole from an elementary school. This recent theft marks the sixth occurrence of such attacks against Pride symbols in the past year, igniting fresh concerns among community leaders and educational officials.
According to the Oxford Ontario Provincial Police, officers responded to reports of damage at Emily Stowe Public School late Saturday night. Witnesses noted that two individuals arrived at approximately 10:30 p.m., dismantled a metal flagpole, took the rainbow flag, and departed towards Stover Street.
Described by police as white males in their late teens or early 20s, one suspect was seen wearing a light shirt with a thin physique. The other, also described as slender, wore a black T-shirt and a light-colored hat paired with blue pants.
This incident follows another flag that was reportedly set ablaze at the same school earlier this month. Similar thefts have occurred in Norwich, including a Pride flag taken from a private residence and other related incidents targeting schools.
Norwich Mayor Jim Palmer criticized the act as "rather cowardly," noting that the township would issue a public statement urging residents to promote respect and tolerance.
Palmer emphasized local governments' limited role in criminal investigations but underscored the significance of fostering understanding and peaceful coexistence within the community.
Oxford County Warden Marcus Ryan denounced the vandalism as shameful, voicing concern about the potential impact on students and families and questioning parental fears regarding school safety.
Ryan raised the issue of insufficient community inclusion support, suggesting that this might lead to divisiveness in the township. He pointed to Norwich Township's refusal to adopt Oxford County's Safe and Well Oxford Plan, which encourages community safety and belonging.
In reaction, the Thames Valley District School Board has assured families that efforts are underway to replace the stolen flag and damaged flagpole promptly, reiterating to parents that discrimination has no place in the school environment.
These recurring acts continue to disturb residents and advocates, highlighting the importance of Pride flags as symbols of support and inclusion for the LGBTQ community. Community leaders are calling for mutual respect and understanding while urging anyone with information to step forward.
Investigators are appealing to the public for information related to this incident, with options for anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers also available.
As the investigation unfolds, local officials and educators are dedicated to fostering a safe and respectful atmosphere for all in the community. Plans to replace the stolen flag and flagpole are already in motion, with continued efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
