Preserving Saudi Heritage: Private Museums of Northern Borders

Preserving Saudi Heritage: Private Museums of Northern Borders

Post by : Badri Ariffin

On International Museum Day, the private museums in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders Region are spotlighted for their dedication to preserving the area’s rich cultural and historical legacy. These establishments draw historians, visitors, and folklore aficionados eager to discover rare artifacts, vintage documents, historical images, and traditional tools reflecting the region's vibrant past.

Notable among the local heritage custodians is Zahiah Al-Anazi, who converted part of her residence into a private museum. This collection includes a traditional bride’s room, attire specific to northern Saudi culture, copper homeware, and examples of Sadu weaving, one of the region’s time-honored crafts.

The region is also significant for its preservation of the Tapline project’s history— a pivotal development from 1950 to 1990 that linked oil fields in eastern Saudi Arabia to the Lebanese port of Sidon. This project significantly influenced the region's social and economic landscape, leaving a profound mark on local communities.

Through their efforts, these private museums are essential in safeguarding Saudi heritage and ensuring that traditional culture and historical narratives are handed down to future generations.
