A striking protest banner reading “Hide the Children, Trump Is Coming!” was prominently displayed on Istanbul’s famous Haliç (Golden Horn) Bridge in anticipation of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit for this week’s NATO summit.
This banner gained significant traction on social media, capturing the attention of online users and multiple Turkish news outlets. It quickly emerged as one of the most visible demonstrations leading up to the international summit.
The banner was unfurled by activists critical of Trump’s trip to Turkey. However, the group organizing the protest has not publicly disclosed its identity or the specific reasoning behind their choice of slogan.
Some social media commenters speculated that the message could relate to allegations in the Jeffrey Epstein case. Nevertheless, the activists did not validate this interpretation, and no official clarification has been made to explain the banner's intent.
Donald Trump is slated to visit Ankara to take part in the NATO leaders' summit. The agenda will cover collective defence, ongoing support for Ukraine, and various regional security concerns.
Reports indicate that he may engage in bilateral discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other regional dignitaries, but the White House has not yet confirmed his full itinerary.
In preparation for the summit, Turkish authorities have implemented rigorous security protocols throughout Ankara.
Authorities have established traffic restrictions, ramped up police presence, and taken additional actions to ensure safety for the visiting leaders and delegations attending the NATO meeting.
The protest banner appeared amid a surge of anti-NATO demonstrations happening in various Turkish cities.
The Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) reported that more than 100 demonstrators were arrested during a protest in Ankara on Sunday, while other gatherings in Istanbul concluded without detentions.
At the time, Turkish officials had not issued comments regarding the arrests.
Since joining NATO in 1952, Turkey has played a crucial role, strategically linking Europe, the Middle East, and the Black Sea.
While remaining a significant ally within the military alliance, Turkey's partnerships with some Western nations have seen periods of tension over issues related to defense, regional disagreements, and foreign policy disputes.
The upcoming NATO summit aims to unite leaders from member countries to analyze the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, European security, and other pressing regional matters.
As increased security measures take hold throughout Turkey, the event has also sparked protests from factions opposing NATO and the arrival of foreign leaders.
