In a nail-biting opener of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Paris Saint-Germain triumphed 5-4 against Bayern Munich in one of the most exhilarating matches ever witnessed. This high-scoring affair at Parc des Princes not only captured the attention of fans but also became the highest-scoring semi-final first leg in Champions League history.
The match was filled with relentless attacking plays, swift counterattacks, controversial calls, and late-game intensity as both teams sought to secure an advantage heading into the return leg in Munich next week. PSG, despite building a significant lead, faced a valiant effort from Bayern, who fought hard for the comeback.
Bayern Munich got off to a strong start, earning a lead in the 17th minute when Harry Kane converted a penalty awarded after PSG’s Willian Pacho fouled Luis Díaz. Kane calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to notch his 13th goal of the tournament.
PSG quickly struck back through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s brilliant curling shot, leveling the score with a magnificent effort after cutting in from the left. Kvaratskhelia proved a constant threat, showcasing his speed and skill against the Bayern defense.
The hosts took the lead when midfielder João Neves found the net with a header from a corner, despite mounting pressure from the Bayern defense. Michael Olise responded for Bayern, finding the back of the net to tie the match at 2-2.
Just before the halftime whistle, PSG regained their lead when another penalty was awarded after VAR confirmed a handball by Bayern’s Alphonso Davies. Despite strong protests from Bayern regarding the call, Ousmane Dembélé converted the penalty, sending the teams into the break with PSG leading 3-2.
PSG continued their attacking prowess in the second half, with Kvaratskhelia netting his second goal following a swift counterattack that exploited Bayern’s defensive line. Dembélé added to PSG’s tally moments later, scoring from a low shot after receiving a pass from Désiré Doué, extending their lead to 5-2.
While PSG seemed in complete control, Bayern rallied with a header from Dayot Upamecano, courtesy of Joshua Kimmich’s free kick, cutting the margin. Luis Díaz later scored, pulling Bayern within one goal, transforming the match's momentum.
The final minutes saw Bayern press for an equalizer while PSG scrambled defensively. Willian Pacho’s crucial goal-line clearance during stoppage time ensured PSG maintained their narrow lead.
Post-match, PSG coach Luis Enrique hailed the intensity of the match as one of the most demanding in his career, commending both teams' attacking styles. Bayern’s coach Vincent Kompany remained optimistic, emphasizing that his side would adopt an aggressive strategy for the crucial return leg in front of their home crowd.
With the semi-final finely poised, fans eagerly anticipate another electrifying encounter next week as PSG seeks a spot in the Champions League final while Bayern aims for a comeback.
The winner will progress to the Champions League final scheduled for May 30 in Budapest.
