The prospects of Punjab Kings advancing to the Indian Premier League playoffs are rapidly fading following their fifth straight defeat. Beginning the season with a strong seven-match unbeaten run, the team has faced significant challenges in recent outings.
In a recent encounter on Thursday, Punjab fell to Mumbai Indians by six wickets, with Tilak Varma’s stellar performance securing the win for Mumbai. With this defeat, Punjab's pathway to the playoffs has become increasingly difficult, now requiring victories against both Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants in their remaining matches.
Assistant coach Brad Haddin acknowledged that the pressure has been overwhelming for the squad amidst this losing streak.
“We simply haven’t managed to handle the pressure in our recent losses,” Haddin stated to the media post-match. “We haven't showcased our true potential when it was crucial, which is quite disappointing.”
He further expressed the team's collective disappointment, particularly after such a hopeful season start.
“It’s undeniable that we must perform better. The takeaway here is our need to bounce back,” he remarked.
Concerns regarding the team’s consistency and player fitness have surfaced during this challenging phase. Nonetheless, Haddin emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and tuning out external negativity.
“You need to manage everything outside and ensure that when you step onto the field, you are mentally prepared,” Haddin concluded.
Punjab Kings are now set to face Bengaluru in a decisive match on Sunday that could critically impact their playoff hopes.
