Putin Kim Pledge Closer Ties Ahead of Trump Summit

Putin Kim Pledge Closer Ties Ahead of Trump Summit

Post by : Meena Ariff

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have promised to deepen their cooperation just days before Putin’s planned meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska. The talks between Putin and Trump are part of efforts to discuss a possible ceasefire in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

According to officials, Putin and Kim spoke on the phone on Tuesday in what was described as a warm and friendly conversation. During the call, Putin thanked Kim for supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. Both leaders discussed topics of shared interest and expressed their commitment to a strong partnership.

Kim’s Support for Russia’s Actions

Kim Jong Un assured Putin that North Korea would remain loyal to the agreement signed between the two nations last year — a mutual defense pact aimed at strengthening military cooperation. He said that his country would fully back any decisions taken by the Russian leadership in the future.

This mutual defense agreement was signed during Putin’s visit to North Korea last year, marking a significant step in the growing alliance between the two countries. Since then, Pyongyang has provided both troops and weapons to support Russia in its military operations in Ukraine.

North Korea’s Role in the Ukraine War

In April, North Korea officially admitted that it had sent soldiers to fight alongside Russian forces on the Ukrainian front lines. This was the first time the country publicly confirmed its direct military involvement in the war.

Russia, facing a prolonged conflict now entering its fourth year, has welcomed the support from North Korea. Both countries have positioned themselves as close allies, bound by shared political and military goals.

Upcoming Alaska Summit with Trump

The phone call between Putin and Kim took place just three days before Putin’s scheduled meeting with Donald Trump in Alaska. This meeting, arranged at Putin’s request, is seen as part of U.S. attempts to find a way to end the war in Ukraine.

U.S. officials have said the Alaska talks are unlikely to bring a breakthrough but could help both sides understand each other’s positions more clearly. The meeting will also allow Trump to directly discuss the conflict with Putin and encourage dialogue between Russia and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Diplomatic Preparations

In preparation for the summit, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Both diplomats discussed ways to make the Alaska meeting successful. A spokesperson said both sides were committed to ensuring the event went smoothly, although details of the discussion were not revealed.

The Sticking Points in Peace Talks

One of the biggest obstacles to ending the war remains the disagreement over territory. Putin has demanded that Ukraine give up the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the east, territories currently at the center of intense fighting. However, President Zelensky has firmly rejected this demand, saying Ukraine will not give away any land.

Trump has suggested the idea of a land swap between Russia and Ukraine, though it remains unclear how such a plan would work or whether either side would agree. He has also said that he would urge Putin to meet directly with Zelensky to help bring the conflict to a close.

Putin’s Strategic Moves

By strengthening ties with North Korea just before the Alaska meeting, Putin appears to be sending a message that Russia has strong allies willing to back its military actions. This could be a way to gain leverage in the upcoming discussions with Trump.

North Korea’s open support for Russia — including military assistance — also puts additional pressure on Ukraine and its Western allies. The growing cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang may make it harder for the U.S. and Europe to isolate Russia diplomatically.

North Korea’s Motivations

For Kim Jong Un, deepening relations with Russia offers political and economic benefits. International sanctions have severely limited North Korea’s economy, but closer ties with Russia could help ease some of that pressure. Military cooperation also gives North Korea access to advanced technology and strategic support.

Additionally, standing by Russia allows Kim to present himself as a key player in global politics, challenging the influence of the United States and its allies in Asia.

Global Reactions and Concerns

The alliance between Russia and North Korea has raised concerns among Western nations. Many fear that increased cooperation could lead to a greater flow of weapons and resources into the Ukraine conflict, prolonging the war.

At the same time, the involvement of North Korean troops in Ukraine has been criticized by several countries as a dangerous escalation. Analysts warn that this partnership could also embolden other nations to form similar military alliances outside traditional global frameworks.

Looking Ahead to the Alaska Talks

As the date for the Alaska summit approaches, expectations remain low for an immediate resolution to the Ukraine war. However, the meeting could open doors for further dialogue and negotiation. Trump has said that his goal is to “walk away with a better understanding” of how to end the conflict.

Whether that understanding will lead to concrete action remains to be seen. For now, both Russia and North Korea seem determined to show unity and strength in the face of international criticism.

The Bigger Picture

The events of this week underline how the war in Ukraine has reshaped global alliances. Countries that once had limited cooperation, like Russia and North Korea, are now openly working together on military and strategic issues. This shift reflects a changing balance of power, one that will likely influence global politics for years to come.

The Alaska summit may not bring peace, but it will be a stage for world leaders to signal their intentions. And as Putin, Kim, and Trump prepare for high-level talks, the rest of the world will be watching closely to see what happens next.
