Indian badminton star and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu suffered an early exit from the Indonesia Open 2026 after losing to world No. 1 An Se Young in the women's singles round of 16. The South Korean continued her impressive dominance over Sindhu with a straight-game victory.
The match ended 21-17, 21-14 in favor of An Se Young, who produced another commanding performance against the Indian shuttler. The defeat came just a week after Sindhu lost to the same opponent in the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open, making it back-to-back setbacks against the reigning Olympic champion.
Sindhu began the contest on a positive note and matched her opponent point for point during the early stages of the opening game. The score remained level at 10-10 before the Indian briefly gained momentum through aggressive attacking strokes and precise net play.
However, An Se Young once again demonstrated why she is currently ranked as the best player in the world. The Korean raised her intensity in crucial moments and claimed a series of important points late in the first game. A demanding 41-shot rally highlighted her defensive strength and helped her secure the opening game advantage.
The second game followed a similar pattern as An controlled the tempo and used her exceptional court coverage to force errors from Sindhu. Building an early lead, the Korean maintained pressure throughout the contest and prevented the Indian from mounting a sustained comeback.
Despite the defeat, Sindhu displayed fighting spirit and continued battling for every point. Her determination allowed her to reduce the deficit on several occasions, but An's consistency, speed, and tactical discipline proved too strong on the day.
The result extends Sindhu's winless record against An Se Young, who has now defeated the Indian star ten consecutive times. While Sindhu's Indonesia Open journey comes to an end, she will look to regroup and focus on upcoming tournaments as she aims to regain momentum on the international badminton circuit.
