During a prominent United Nations gathering in New York, Qatar reiterated its call for enhanced humanitarian diplomacy aimed at protecting civilians caught in conflict worldwide.
Organized alongside the Protection of Civilians Week 2026, this event was hosted by Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the UN in collaboration with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) as well as various global organizations and nations.
Attendees included representatives from nations such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Norway, and Sweden, alongside agencies like the International Committee of the Red Cross, Qatar Red Crescent Society, and Save the Children.
The agenda centered around enhancing civilian protection amidst escalating and complex global humanitarian crises.
In her recorded address, HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad emphasized that humanitarian diplomacy is fundamental to Qatar’s international policy. She highlighted Qatar’s commitment to dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and adherence to international law.
Dr. Al Misnad pointed out that mediation stands as a cornerstone of Qatar’s approach, showcasing the country’s “integrated model” that marries mediation with prompt humanitarian action to optimize aid delivery and bolster protection initiatives in hard-hit conflict regions.
She noted the increasing politicization of civilian protection challenges, stressing the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and ensuring aid reaches those in need.
Kicking off the discussions, HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, remarked that humanitarian assistance is frequently obstructed as civilians endure ongoing attacks and breaches of humanitarian law.
She underlined that decisions about humanitarian corridors and aid deliveries are often disconnected from ground realities, asserting the necessity for intensified political and diplomatic action from leadership to confront these matters.
Sheikha Alya further asserted that humanitarian diplomacy serves as a pivotal tool for fostering political backing and weaving humanitarian issues into global and multilateral dialogues.
Moreover, she reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to mediation and humanitarian initiatives across various regions, including collaborative efforts in Gaza and support for peace-building in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In related remarks, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher called upon the international community to utilize political influence and diplomatic initiatives to enhance civilian protection. He also commended Qatar’s collaboration with OCHA in furthering humanitarian work globally.
