During the 67th Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Qatar reaffirmed its support for the organization’s Director General's reappointment.
The Qatari contingent was spearheaded by Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva.
On behalf of her nation, she conveyed profound backing for Daren Tang of Singapore, who is vying for a second tenure as WIPO’s Director General. She commended his governance and asserted that the renewed global confidence signifies his dedication to enhancing the organization’s stature.
Dr. Al Muftah emphasized the significant milestones achieved under Tang’s leadership, particularly the successful finalization of two landmark treaties within a single year—the Treaty on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources and the Design Law Treaty.
She also spotlighted the strengthening partnership between Qatar and WIPO, indicating that Tang's first term marked remarkable advancements in strategic collaboration. Qatar has also made strides in modernizing its intellectual property framework, exemplified by the formulation of a National Intellectual Property Strategy and signing on to various new international agreements overseen by WIPO.
Additionally, Qatar entered into several memoranda of understanding aimed at enhancing academic and technical engagement with WIPO.
Reiterating Qatar’s dedication, she underscored the nation’s commitment to WIPO’s initiatives and aspirations to augment cooperation in the years ahead. She emphasized the pivotal role of intellectual property in fostering innovation, creativity, and attaining Sustainable Development Goals while maximizing economic and social advantages for member nations.
