Qatar Guarantees Sufficient Sheep Supply for Eid Al-Adha Festivities

Qatar Guarantees Sufficient Sheep Supply for Eid Al-Adha Festivities

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The Livestock Department of Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality has verified that there is an adequate supply of local sheep and planned imports to satisfy the market requirements for Eid Al-Adha.

In anticipation of the festive season, the Ministry has implemented a detailed operational strategy aimed at ensuring the ongoing availability of sheep for Eid sacrifices in local markets. Coordinating with local breeders and licensed import firms, authorities are diligently observing livestock supplies to maintain equilibrium between demand and availability.

Efforts to enhance local production have also been highlighted by the Ministry. Working alongside Widam Food Company and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, a new initiative has been launched to stimulate local sheep breeding. The program enables breeders to sell livestock competitively while providing them free concentrated feed.

Operations for supplying sheep via Widam Food Company are set to commence on Thursday, May 7. The Ministry will offer both technical and material assistance for sheep breeding and fattening initiatives to boost local contributions to market needs.

On the aspect of imports, the Ministry continues to scrutinize import companies and their licenses while broadening approved sourcing options based on the health statuses of exporting nations. Fully equipped veterinary quarantine facilities will be on standby to manage incoming livestock shipments.

Both local and imported livestock are subjected to stringent health and safety protocols. Imported sheep undergo several inspections, including an assessment of the disease status in the exporting regions, adherence to World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) standards, veterinary quarantine evaluations, laboratory testing at entry points, and ongoing market assessments post-arrival.

Eid sacrifice imports are carefully regulated using a permit system with specific health regulations to guarantee a secure and stable supply in the market.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to support local livestock producers through complimentary veterinary services, subsidized animal feed, and structured marketing avenues.

Consumers are encouraged to procure Eid sacrifices solely from authorized markets, ensuring the animals are healthy, with no signs of illness such as lethargy or unusual discharge. Furthermore, residents are advised against slaughtering animals outside permitted slaughterhouses to maintain public health.
