Qatar Confirms Ongoing US-Iran Technical Discussions Without High-Level Meetings

Qatar Confirms Ongoing US-Iran Technical Discussions Without High-Level Meetings

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The recent visit of US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Doha is part of a series of dialogues with mediators aimed at addressing major regional matters, especially the US-Iran talks and the scenario in Lebanon, according to Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

During the ministry's weekly media briefing, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari indicated that the discussions fall within extensive diplomatic consultations involving mediators. He emphasized that, at this moment, there are no high-level meetings occurring between the United States and Iran within the stipulated negotiation framework.

Technical-Level US-Iran Engagement Persists

Al Ansari detailed that the technical conversations between Iranian and American teams have proceeded since earlier discussions held in Lausanne. These exchanges are happening through varied channels, both direct and indirect.

He reiterated Qatar's commitment to the established diplomatic framework where technical discussions are pursued alongside high-level negotiations. Efforts are being upheld by mediators in Doha and elsewhere to facilitate communication between the two parties.

According to Al Ansari, both delegations remain actively involved, with conversations continuing in various formats to progress the dialogue.

Strait of Hormuz Integral to Regional Discourse

Commenting on the developments regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Al Ansari stated that Qatar is striving to avert further escalations while endorsing the ongoing technical negotiations.

He reaffirmed Qatar's stance on the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, deeming it an international waterway. Rising tensions only exacerbate existing differences, he noted, while maritime security and nuclear discussions remain pivotal topics during negotiations.

Qatar Discusses Role with Frozen Iranian Assets

Regarding frozen Iranian assets, Al Ansari clarified that these funds are associated with the 2023 US-Iran agreement that established a humanitarian financial channel managed by Qatar.

He emphasized that Qatar serves solely as a financial intermediary, possessing no ownership of the funds. The release of these assets is contingent upon mutual agreements between the United States and Iran and the advancements made in negotiations.

Qatar Engages in Ongoing Regional Coordination

Al Ansari noted that Qatar is closely working with regional partners, including Oman, to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and diminish tensions.

He added that channels of communication remain open as regional nations deliberate broader frameworks for dialogue rooted in sovereignty, non-interference, and good neighbourly relations.

Qatar Advocates for Dialogue as the Sole Solution

Reiterating Qatar's diplomatic philosophy, Al Ansari stated that sustainable resolutions to regional disputes can only be reached through dialogue and negotiations. He highlighted that ongoing conflicts have impacted maritime security and regional stability.

He asserted that restoring stability hinges on addressing the security concerns of all stakeholders through continued diplomatic engagement. Despite previous violations of its sovereignty, Qatar remains steadfast in its mediation efforts and commitment to open communication.

In closing, Al Ansari outlined that current diplomatic initiatives involve a ceasefire framework, a memorandum of understanding, and ongoing talks. He emphasized that the most reliable path to lasting peace is establishing a sustainable political settlement through persistent dialogue.
