Qatar Gene Bank Upholds Biodiversity with 11.37 Million Seeds

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, Qatar's Ministry of Municipality showcased the Qatar Gene Bank's paramount contributions to biodiversity conservation.

Under the theme, "Acting Locally for Global Impact," the event stressed the significance of safeguarding biodiversity, protecting genetic resources, and ensuring food security.

Established in 2012, the Qatar Gene Bank has effectively safeguarded 11.37 million seeds, covering nearly 75 percent of Qatar's native wild plant species, thus securing the nation’s natural legacy.

The Ministry detailed that the Gene Bank has cataloged 1,404 genetic accessions and conducted over 1,200 field missions in Qatar's reserves to collect and monitor horticultural diversity.

Moreover, 894 of Qatar’s genetic accessions are listed in globally recognized databases, fostering worldwide scientific collaboration and enhancing biodiversity conservation knowledge.

In addition to this, the Gene Bank has preserved 3,500 standard herbarium specimens, which serve as vital resources for research purposes.

To develop local expertise, the Gene Bank has facilitated training for 100 individuals through 20 international programs, accumulating a total of 600 training hours focused on biodiversity and genetic resource management.

Furthermore, Qatar's genetic resources are now officially recognized by the FAO’s global system, reinforcing the country's role in worldwide biodiversity protection and sustainable agricultural practices.

The remarkable accomplishments of the Qatar Gene Bank underscore the nation’s dedication to environmental sustainability and the preservation of biodiversity for future generations.
