London: A remarkable evening gown inspired by the lotus, India’s national flower, is currently exhibited in London as part of a significant showcase honoring the fashion legacy of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
This exquisite gown, crafted by renowned royal designer Norman Hartnell, was created for a state dinner hosted by the then-President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in New Delhi in January 1961. It stands out as a highlight in the “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” exhibition at the King’s Gallery, located in Buckingham Palace.
The silk garment is adorned with intricate zardozi-style embroidery in the shape of lotus flowers. It features lace, pearl beads, sequins, and crystals, all of which echo the rich tradition of Indian craftsmanship and its deep cultural significance.
As per insights from the exhibition curators, the lotus motif was deliberately selected due to its representation as India's national flower, making the gown particularly fitting for the Queen’s visit to the country.
Initially, the gown was accompanied by an elegant long train, which was later modified with a chic bolero jacket, allowing it to be worn in a more casual manner.
The exhibition further explores how Queen Elizabeth II utilized fashion as a diplomatic gesture during her international engagements. Another gown from her 1961 Commonwealth tour, worn during a state banquet in Karachi, was created using Pakistan’s national colours, featuring a striking emerald pleat.
Curators noted that designers Norman Hartnell and Hardy Amies meticulously crafted culturally sensitive apparel for the Queen during her historic 1961 expedition to India, Pakistan, and Nepal.
This tour was significant as it marked the first time a reigning British monarch visited India following its independence. During this visit, Queen Elizabeth II also had the honor of being the Guest of Honour at India’s Republic Day Parade.
Organized to celebrate the centenary year of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96, the exhibition shines a light on her enlightened fashion decisions and the artistry behind her wardrobe.
The display features over 300 dresses and accessories, spanning her life from childhood to her reign as monarch. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view rare design sketches, fabric samples, and handwritten notes showcasing the meticulous process behind royal costume design.
This exhibition at Buckingham Palace will welcome the public until October and is hailed as one of the most extensive royal fashion displays ever curated.
