The upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18 are shaping up to be a significant political contest, with parties closely monitoring shifting political equations following recent state elections. The polls will determine the composition of the Upper House and could strengthen the ruling National Democratic Alliance’s position in Parliament.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has intensified its preparations for the elections, with senior leaders discussing candidate selection and electoral strategy. Party sources indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently chaired a meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee to review plans for the crucial contest.
The NDA is optimistic about improving its strength in the Rajya Sabha and is aiming to cross the 150-member mark. Currently holding 148 seats, the alliance is expected to secure between 17 and 18 of the 25 seats that are going to polls. Such a result would move the coalition closer to a two-thirds majority in the Upper House.
One of the major talking points ahead of the election is the possibility of cross-voting in states where margins are tight. Political observers are particularly focused on Madhya Pradesh, where three Rajya Sabha seats are at stake. The Congress has enough numbers to win one seat but remains vulnerable due to a narrow surplus of supporting votes.
Several prominent political figures are also reaching the end of their current Rajya Sabha terms. These include Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, and Union Ministers George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu. Their future roles are expected to influence party strategies.
In Karnataka, the Congress appears well-positioned to secure three seats based on its legislative strength, ensuring Kharge’s likely return to the Rajya Sabha. Rajasthan is expected to witness a competitive contest, with the BJP projected to win two seats while the Congress is likely to secure one.
The Congress is facing a particularly difficult situation in Gujarat, where it risks losing its only Rajya Sabha representation after the term of Shaktisinh Gohil ends later this month. With insufficient legislative support to secure a seat, the party could find itself without representation in the Upper House from the state for the first time in many years.
The election process officially begins with the issuance of the notification, while June 8 has been set as the final date for filing nominations. Apart from regular vacancies, by-elections will also be conducted for three additional seats, making the contest an important test of political strength ahead of future electoral battles.
