Rama Duwaji: Gen Z Artist Who Helped Shape Mamdani’s New York Campaign

Rama Duwaji: Gen Z Artist Who Helped Shape Mamdani’s New York Campaign

Post by : Rameen Ariff

At 28, Rama Duwaji has emerged as New York City’s first Gen Z First Lady. Though often out of the spotlight, she played a key role behind the scenes in Zohran Mamdani’s bid—designing campaign visuals, steering his online voice and markedly expanding his social media reach—while seldom granting public interviews or magazine features alongside her husband.

A Syrian-American illustrator, Duwaji moved to the United States in 2021. She and Mamdani connected on the dating app Hinge and announced their engagement in October 2024. The couple marked their commitment with a private nikah and engagement celebration on a Dubai rooftop, followed by a courthouse wedding in New York earlier this year.

Duwaji earned an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her portfolio engages themes of sisterhood, Arab identity, communal life and political resistance. Several pieces communicate pro-Palestinian perspectives, including portrayals that reference violence and U.S. involvement in the region.

Living in Brooklyn, she also produces hand-illustrated ceramics, notably blue-and-white plates. Her online presence is substantial—nearly 235,000 Instagram followers—where she posts her art, political reflections and personal moments, occasionally revealing aspects of her partnership with Mamdani.

While Mamdani’s election as New York’s first Muslim mayor has drawn international attention, Duwaji’s combination of creative direction and private support was central to his public image. Her arrival as the city’s first Gen Z First Lady signals a generational shift and underscores the growing role of young artists in political life.
