Ramadan Moon Sighting 2026 Indonesia Malaysia and Philippines Confirm Start Date

Ramadan Moon Sighting 2026 Indonesia Malaysia and Philippines Confirm Start Date

Post by : Shakul

Authorities in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines have officially confirmed that Ramadan 2026 will begin on Thursday, February 19, as the crescent moon was not sighted on Tuesday evening.

In Indonesia, the Ministry of Religious Affairs announced the decision after holding the traditional Sidang Isbat meeting on February 17. Officials confirmed that the Ramadan moon was not visible at observation points across the country. As a result, the month of Sha’ban will complete 30 days, and fasting will start on February 19.

Malaysia also confirmed the same date. The announcement was made by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, who stated that the crescent moon was not sighted during observations carried out at multiple locations nationwide.

In the Philippines, the Bangsamoro Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulrauf Guialani declared that Ramadan will begin on February 19. Moon sighting activities were conducted in various parts of Mindanao and nearby regions.

Authorities explained that astronomical conditions made moon sighting difficult, as the moon was below the horizon at sunset in many areas. An annular solar eclipse occurring on the same day also played a role, since eclipses happen during the new moon phase when the crescent cannot be seen.

Local administrations have begun preparations for Ramadan prayers and fasting. In parts of the Philippines, some courts announced limited work suspensions to mark the beginning of the holy month.

With the official announcements completed, Muslims across Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines will observe their first fast of Ramadan 2026 on Thursday, February 19, as communities prepare for a month of prayer, fasting and reflection.
