Apple's iPhone Pocket Pricing Sparks Social Media Frenzy

Apple's iPhone Pocket Pricing Sparks Social Media Frenzy

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The introduction of Apple's new accessory, the iPhone Pocket, has ignited significant discussion, given its hefty £219.95 price tag. Announced on Tuesday, this designer case for iPhones has quickly become a target for online ridicule, as users question its practicality and cost.

In collaboration with renowned Japanese fashion brand Issey Miyake, the iPhone Pocket is available in a spectrum of vibrant hues. Apple claims the accessory draws inspiration from “a piece of cloth,” designed to serve as an “additional pocket” for iPhone users. The collection offers short straps in eight colors and longer straps in three, merging style with utility.

Responses on social media have been immediate and harsh. Users have equated the case to common household items, with one person humorously declaring it as “$230 for a cut-up sock.” Many pointed out its sock-like appearance and lack of closures, raising security concerns amid rising iPhone thefts. There has even been playful comparison to the iconic green mankini from Sacha Baron Cohen’s character, Borat.

Yet, supporters argue for the price, citing the importance of the Issey Miyake collaboration and emphasizing the accessory's status as a representation of brand heritage. The rich colors, limited-edition release, and designer influence indicate that Apple is marketing the iPhone Pocket as a luxury fashion item rather than just a practical device.

As opinions continue to divide, the iPhone Pocket further fuels a larger conversation about consumer loyalty in the tech industry. While Apple advocates may view it as a desirable collectible, others see the price as a challenging benchmark for brand allegiance, merging the realms of technology and fashion.
