Nepal has recorded a historic milestone on Mount Everest after 274 climbers successfully reached the summit in a single day from the Nepali side of the mountain. The achievement marks the highest number of climbers ever to scale the world’s tallest peak within one day.
Officials from Nepal’s hiking and tourism department confirmed that the new figure surpassed the previous single-day record of 223 climbers set in 2019. The massive rush to the summit came during a favourable weather window that allowed climbers to make their final ascent safely.
Mount Everest, standing at 8,849 metres above sea level, lies on the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region. This year, however, climbers were only allowed to ascend from the Nepali side after Chinese authorities reportedly did not issue climbing permits for expeditions from Tibet.
Photographs and videos from the mountain showed long queues of climbers slowly moving toward the summit ridge. Experts have repeatedly warned that overcrowding in Everest’s “death zone” above 8,000 metres can become extremely dangerous because oxygen levels are critically low and weather conditions can change rapidly.
Adventure experts say traffic congestion near the summit can lead to exhaustion, frostbite, oxygen shortages, and delays that increase the risk of fatalities. Several mountaineers and guides have previously raised concerns about growing commercialisation and overcrowding on Everest during peak climbing seasons.
In response to safety concerns, Nepal has introduced tighter regulations and increased permit fees in recent years to improve crowd management and expedition safety. Authorities are also monitoring climber movements more closely to reduce risks at higher altitudes.
Despite the concerns, Everest continues to attract hundreds of international climbers every year who dream of conquering the iconic Himalayan peak. Officials believe the summit count may rise further as some expedition teams have yet to report their successful ascents to base camp authorities.
The latest record once again highlights both the global fascination with Mount Everest and the growing challenges Nepal faces in balancing tourism revenue, adventure tourism demand, and climber safety on the world’s most famous mountain.
