Winnipeg Makes History with Major Drug Bust in Nationwide Investigation

Winnipeg Makes History with Major Drug Bust in Nationwide Investigation

Post by : Shweta

Authorities have declared a groundbreaking drug bust in Winnipeg, marking the largest operation in the Winnipeg Police Service’s history following a comprehensive two-year investigation that unfolded across several provinces. Dubbed “Project Puma,” this extensive operation yielded a staggering $37.2 million in illegal drugs and unveiled a significant organized crime syndicate involved in drug trafficking throughout Canada. Confirmed arrests have reached 33, accompanied by 174 official charges linked to the investigation.

The Winnipeg police reported that in the course of several raids conducted in Manitoba, Alberta, and Ontario, substantial amounts of cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl were seized. The recovered quantities included approximately 339 kilograms of methamphetamine, 175 kilograms of cocaine, and over 11 kilograms of fentanyl. The seized narcotics were reportedly being disseminated through a vast distribution network associated with organized crime.

Describing this operation as the most significant drug seizure ever in Manitoba’s record, authorities also confiscated 14 firearms, around $825,000 in cash, and over a million illegal cigarettes during the investigation. Reports indicated that this extensive criminal network had connections to notable organized crime factions, including the Hells Angels, the Wolfpack Alliance gang, and unnamed Mexican drug cartels.

According to investigators, the operation commenced in late 2023 when they received intel regarding a dominant criminal entity functioning between Manitoba and Alberta. By May 2024, Project Puma was officially initiated by the Winnipeg Police, receiving backing from provincial authorities and law enforcement agencies nationwide. As the investigation progressed, officers identified multiple trafficking groups collaborating under a singular, extensive criminal network responsible for the importation and distribution of controlled substances.

Inspector Josh Ewatski from the Winnipeg Police Service’s Organized Crime unit highlighted the increasing availability of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine, exacerbating addiction and overdose challenges across Canada. He noted that the investigation targeted both the main orchestrators and street-level traffickers tied to the operation. There is optimism that dismantling this criminal network will greatly mitigate the influx of harmful drugs into communities throughout Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.

Justice Minister Matt Wiebe of Manitoba commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, calling the operation a significant triumph against organized crime. He underscored the importance of the coordination between police departments and governmental bodies in achieving this successful outcome. Authorities have cautioned that such criminal organizations are increasingly collaborating across jurisdictions and international borders, complicating drug investigations significantly.

This case has captured national attention due to the magnitude of the drug seizure and the escalating concerns regarding fentanyl-related fatalities and organized crime activity. Law enforcement continues to work diligently, indicating that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests or charges may arise as evidence related to the trafficking network is reviewed.
