The NFL has levied a $14,491 fine against Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle for a touchdown celebration during Sunday’s 16-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, league sources said.
Dowdle marked his score with two pelvic thrusts in the end zone while teammates counted along. The gesture drew attention because it appeared to reference a sketch from the comedy series Key & Peele.
NFL Rules on Celebrations
The league enforces strict limits on celebrations, prohibiting actions it deems taunting or aggressive, such as mimicking a weapon, as well as "prolonged or excessive celebrations or demonstrations by an individual player or multiple players." Officials judged Dowdle’s actions to fall within those prohibited behaviors.
Impact on the Game
The play drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty, which had an immediate game effect. The Panthers later missed the extra point after the touchdown, a miss that affected the final scoring margin.
Dowdle’s Response
Dowdle announced he has opened a fundraiser to cover the fine, stating that all proceeds — 100% — will be donated to the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, which provides adoption, foster care, family-preservation and educational services.
He added with a touch of humour, "I’ve set up a fundraiser to handle my fine. Key said I got three pumps — apparently the NFL doesn’t agree."
Appeal Planned
Agent David Canter said the team will appeal the penalty, confirming the Panthers plan to challenge the league’s ruling.
Health Update and Upcoming Game
Though Dowdle missed Wednesday’s practice with a quadriceps issue, the team indicated the absence was unrelated to the celebration. Carolina is preparing to host the New Orleans Saints in its next game this weekend.
As the season continues, Dowdle remains a focal point both for his on-field contributions and the conversation sparked by the celebration. With proceeds directed to charity, the episode has generated discussion and raised funds off the field.
